Shaping the psychology of cities. Sharing the knowledge to build healthier urban futures.

The Centre for Urban Psychology (CUP) advances knowledge at the intersection of cities, psychology, behaviour, and policy, generating insights that help urban environments better support human life. Our research responds to a central premise: cities are psychological environments, and understanding how people experience, interpret, and respond to urban conditions is essential to creating healthier, more liveable, and more resilient cities.

Our work follows a hybrid action-research model, combining empirical research with real-world applications, participatory engagement, and policy translation. This ensures that our findings directly inform urban design, governance, and community well-being.

Our Research Approach

Our work follows an iterative cycle that connects research to practice and policy:

Observational & Experimental Research

Conducting field studies, psychological assessments, and data analysis.

Urban Prototyping & Pilot Interventions

Testing behavioural insights in real urban settings through pilot programs and urban design experiments.

Community & Stakeholder Engagement

Partnering with local communities, urban planners, and policymakers to co-develop solutions.

Policy Integration & Implementation

Translating findings into scalable policies and design frameworks for cities.
